Creative process, materials, and more.
Why did you choose the name Nature Mutante?
Because the theme that naturally, obviously, and repeatedly presents itself to me is that of transformation and its relationship to time. I navigate this concept, drawing inspiration primarily from the impermanence of nature and its diverse, countless metamorphoses.
Traditional or digital art?
I love traditional drawing! But I do occasionally experiment with digital drawing, mainly when I'm presenting sketches to my clients; it allows me to modify the design more easily.
What art forms do you prefer and/or practice?
In my early days, before starting my business, I mainly painted on canvas and did small murals on commission; I loved painting. But over time, I rediscovered a very strong love for graphite drawing! I feel I can express myself more easily with this medium. Moreover, with graphite, I've naturally developed my own unique style, something I couldn't quite achieve with painting at that time.
Of course, I now have a great passion for making leather books. I have no formal training in leatherwork, but I love exploring leather in my own way, through trial and error!
Another of my great passions, which unfortunately gets a bit neglected, is making costumes and accessories. It's something I do purely for myself, for fun, whenever I have the chance and when I participate in costume events!
Do you offer drawing classes or workshops?
I've never given drawing classes or workshops before, but it's something I'm thinking about more. I'm open to giving private or semi-private drawing lessons, depending on your needs!
What materials do you use to make your handmade books?
Most of the books I design are made with animal leather (which I buy from a Canadian company) and 160 gsm Fabriano mixed-media paper. I often dye the paper with coffee or onion skins.
